Medical clinic in Cusco

The contrast between Western medical facilities and practice and those of the developing world is huge. This in itself contributes to your experience and knowledge.
Proyecto Peru offers placements in a medical clinic in Cusco, Peru. You will be part of a team and you will need a lot of initiative to do this placement. You will see all the aspects of working in a medical clinic in Peru. Depending on your experience and your Spanish level, you will be assisting the doctors in their daily work. The project runs all year round and is available for a minimum of 4 weeks. You can do this medical placement in a local clinic as an internship or as a volunteer.
Physiotherapy
The clinic is a private clinic that offers medical care through various services: traumatolgie, psychology and neurology at very affordable price for children from low income families. This clinic is a specialist in the rehabilitation of disabled children by means of physiotherapy. As a volunteer or intern with a background in physiotherapy or ergotherapy, you can assist in this clinic with therapy. The clinic has a room for general physiotherapy with machines and a room for physiotherapy for children. In the clinic 2 different target groups get treatments. The first group is the physically handicapped children of the shelter. The second group contains people from outside who come for a treatment to the clinic. This group contains as children as well as adults.
Health project
Malnutricion
The health project has an intervention strategy for promotion and health prevention and nutrition. The aim of this social project is reducing malnutrition of the children. A volunteer or intern can assist in the following activities:
• monitoring of the weight and height of children
• assistance and advice to families in their homes about health and nutrition
• training of mothers in the field of preventive health and nutrition
• support health campaigns
• entering data (weight, length, visits, training records, etc.).
In this project, a volunteer can work with women and families who live or lived with problems with violence within the family. A volunteer can accompany the women that are hospitalized, assist in training and education and assistance in gathering information. This volunteer work can only be done by a volunteer with a relevant background.
Medical Spanish course
Proyecto Peru offers Spanish for medical purposes. The Medical Spanish course will give you a specialized vocabulary and you will develop your Spanish in many practical contexts. The course will prepare you for meeting patients who only speak Spanish and for talking with doctors and nurses. The Medical Spanish course is your perfect preparation for a medical placement in Peru.
The medical Spanish course is an individual course of 15 hours per week, 3 hours per day. The lessons are given in the mornings or afternoons. It is possible to do a Medical Spanish course and do volunteer work or an internship in a local medical clinic at the same time.
Medical package
Proyecto Peru offers a special Medical Package in June and July. The package is 4 weeks. If you come in June or July, you can have classes of Spanish for medical purposes in a small group instead of individual. The Medical Package will give you a specialized Spanish course of 15 hours a week, 3 hours a day in a group of a maximum of 4 medical students. So you will have 60 hours of medical Spanish in total.
During the 4 weeks, you will work in a local medical clinic. As a medical student you will gain a worthy experience, working in a clinic in Cusco. And you will have a homestay in a local guest family during the 4 weeks, where you will have all meals. Besides that you will have 3 excursions in the weekends. One excursion is a full day in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Another trip is a full weekend to Lake Titicaca where you will have a boat trip on the lake, visit different islands and sleep 1 night on an island. And of course there is a visit to Machu Picchu.
